What to Look for in a Massage Therapist
Finding a truly excellent massage therapist is harder than it sounds. Licensing requirements vary by state, experience levels vary enormously, and the difference between a mediocre massage and an exceptional one can be the difference between leaving refreshed and leaving disappointed.
The hallmarks of a genuinely skilled massage therapist include: formal LMT licensure with continuing education, years of hands-on practice, an understanding of anatomy and physiology that goes beyond technique, and the intuitive ability to locate and address tension rather than simply follow a routine.
By these measures, Cissie Pryor at Living Health Day Spa is simply in a different category. As a Licensed Massage Therapist, Registered Nurse with 45+ years of clinical experience, and founder of Tennessee School of Massage — the longest solely-owned massage school in Tennessee — she brings a level of expertise to massage therapy that cannot be replicated elsewhere in the Arlington and greater Memphis area.
Cissie Pryor's Credentials in Massage Therapy
Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) — 35+ Years
Cissie has been a practicing Licensed Massage Therapist for over 35 years. Her technique combines Swedish relaxation work with deep tissue therapeutic intervention — transitioning naturally to deeper pressure wherever tension is found. Clients consistently describe her sessions as unlike any massage they've experienced.
Founder of Tennessee School of Massage
Cissie and her husband David founded Tennessee School of Massage in 1988 — and it remains the longest solely-owned massage school in the state. The school received official approval from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission in the mid-1990s when the State of Tennessee reached out to regulate the massage industry. She has trained and licensed hundreds of massage therapists across Tennessee.
Registered Nurse, 45+ Years of Clinical Experience
As a Registered Nurse specializing in psychiatric and mental health care, Cissie brings a clinical understanding of the nervous system, anatomy, and the mind-body connection that no esthetician-trained massage therapist can match. She understands, at a medical level, why certain techniques work and how the body responds to therapeutic touch.
Additional Modalities: Cupping, Sound Healing, Energy Work
Beyond traditional massage, Cissie integrates DragonFire™ Magnetic Cupping, Tibetan singing bowl therapy, and chakra-based energy work into her practice. The Rainbow Balancing Chakrassage — one of her signature offerings — weaves all of these together into a single 90-minute session unlike anything else in the region.
